i'd like to point out that i've crashed enough times on dirt to realise that crashing on the road would suck alot more, before you think i ride like im trying to keep up with the General Lee.

Ouch! I've done that, only in leathers, and got the biggest bruise I've ever had

I dont hava a bike at the moment but the when I did I never went out without protective kit on. This was due to a VERY slow fall when I was learning to ride whilst in jeans. The jeans were about as much protection as a smear of butter and I got more road rash than I ever wanted again. When an old man in a Merc took me off my bike at 40 mph I slid / tumbled about 40 feet along the road and was very chuffed that I could get up with only a shock and light bruising. Interesting experience in slowmo ... blue grey blue grey blue .

I was very, VERY, pleased I was in leathers - sliding along the tarmac at 40mph scuffed them up a bit, but kept me in one piece :xbeer:

These days I don't have a motorbike, but I do ride bicycles, and at 30 - 40 mph downhill leaning into the corners it does cross your mind that it might be best not to fall off just now

I have a similar feeling boarding . Ive not fallen for a while (i dont count controlled sit downs) and I know snow is softer than a road but catching an edge at that speed still worries me.

Same here. Especially on ice.

Bloody hate boarding on ice - it's just so sketchy and hard to control :banghead:

Loving mountain biking just now despite last weekend's fall, but still really struggling to find any real downhill speed

I've had some lovely ice burns resulting from snowboarding (badly) on ice.

It's the sudden loss of an edge, meaning either an abrupt hard landing, or burning legs from fighting to recover it

Depends what you mean by ice though. I know some people consider hard pack wind blown snow as "icy" while in Scotland you get used to riding on what was running water and is now frozen. Real Ice.

My usual technique is to spot it coming then straight line it until there is enough snow to take a turn and scrub speed.

If I don't spot it, then I go for DoaS option one.

I don't especially like hard-pack, but it's ice when it's glassy.

Saw some fantastic ice when we were in St Gervais. The route down the mountain crosses a road several times, so everyone has to stop in small, narrow places to take off boards/skis. We only boarded the morning (too busy), and thought it pretty bad - maybe a metre of shiny ice at each stopping point, but avoidable round the edges. It was only at the very bottom where there was no grip to be found anywhere - I went down with a big thump  We then went up the gondola with a camera later on, and the ice patches had extended for 4-5 metres above these little narrow gaps, with no soft bits to the side. People were trying to walk it, and ending up sliding on their backsides down to the roadside

Yup, glassy is ice. Mid/late season in Oz was great for practising ice riding.

The car park for my flat was the same when we had the snow recently - perfectly smooth sheet ice. For a while you couldn't get cars in or out, and standing still was impossible

ice is, well ice - although not just a hard packed run, but maybe a very hard packed run first thing in the morning after a warm day the day before - the piste bashers have then compacted and flattened out the slushy slopes and they have frozen rock hard overnight - I might well call that 'icy' after I've struggled down the run

Hmmm
Have you any idea quite how fast 30mph is on a push bike ?
I can get 32 ish on Glentress with the Trance, but that's pushin the limits a bit.
You need to be pretty ballsy to get that !

I hit 46 once, but it didn't end well !
