I just got a quote on my parents car..

Postby mysterious_rider » Sat Jul 31, 2010 11:30 am

Got the old man to phone up his insurance company to get me a quote on their car...

Basically, 9 years no claims, 50 years old, no claims or accidents in that time, and my mums 50, insured on the car, 9 years no claims,

car is a daewoo 1.6 automatic hatchback.
Simple little car. Slow. Nothing sporty..

had a full licence a week, but before a years worth of riding a motorcycle, prolly makes no difference, but worth mentioning.
and im 19.
3000 pounds for me.

What a joke. I'm shocked. I was expecting 1.5k-2k.

It's not the value of the car, it's what the likely costs are of settling claims where people are injured and need medical costs and possibly compensation for lost earnings etc - bent metal is cheap in comparison.

Unfortunately for you and your generation, the risk assessors have realised that young men are far and away the highest risk group, and premiums will always reflect that

That's a lot. Back in 1991 I insured an Opel Manta 1.8 aged 18 for £520 myself, I was earning £127 a week at the time, so it was roughly 4 weeks wages for the year!
At this point we decided to call it a day, and move onto something safer... like the over the blind crest third gear one leg off stand-up wheelie competition.

i got a vx220 when i was 20..... was 3k for me on my own.... wack it into my mums name, dad as a second driver, me as a third, 600 quid. Yes you can argue that mum couldnt get into the car, i would be main driver etc, but still, by law, you are insured and responsible for your own actions.....

i think ive only had insurance in my own name once in the last 10 years.... till you get to 28 its almost pointless i think

edit: just re read your post and that was a qoute of you added on?! thats amazing.

yep, thats the quote of me added on lol. That's what I'm saying, I would expect because my parents are main driver/s and own it, I shouldn't be paying that much.

It's fraud/theft in it's most legal form. Just not fair, yet as a few above have said, years ago it would cost just a few hundred to get insurance.

Even on my bike, at the age of 19, held prov licence for a year and a half, 125cc honda ns125r 19 yr old model, 300 third party for the year.

Bike insurance is so much cheaper though, I'd be happy to pay 1200 for the year for a car. even for a pathetic automatic with sod all guts behind it.

it makes me wonder how these 17 year olds are driving. Im 19, surely two years makes a difference?

fast forward another 9 years and it might matter - until then you are (in the view of the insurance companies) a terribly high risk :violin:

I remember talking to a work mate who was facingthe same problems you are, trying to sort insurance for his 19 year old nephew to get his own car - it was going to cost over £2k to insure him on a car costing maybe £1.5k - and that was about 10 years ago - so I don't think your problem is all that new

Have a search through pistonheads or other similar places and see if there's any tips on insurers who specialise in young drivers

Actually, you're not. You're committing insurance fraud and as such your policy is invalid and you're not insured.

it would take a lot to prove that you are the "main" driver...... you live in the same house, you drive the same car.... what clarifies people as being the main driver etc?

out of interest has anyone ever had an issue?

have you looked at a quote for just a 1 litre car? just for comparison?

I have, and its still high, just not as high as that.

erm, they usually prove it by who owns the car. So if its in your name, they might find out whos main. That said, i still cant see how they can actually prove it.

Going to try one more company that specialises in young persons insurance. Otherwise I'm just going to drive the car. It's ludicrous I'm going to have to do this, but I really cannot see any other way, It's the insurance companies making it impossible for young drivers.

im sure whos name it is in would be a school boy error when insuring... im sure the type of car would come into it as well in an assesors point of view....

i think just driving the car is the worst possible option...... have you been on pistonheads? defo ask there as they are a good forum for all things cars.

just to add and I hope it doesnt piss you off too much, but in a lot of Europe, its the car that is insured, not the driver...... as long as you have the permission of the owner to be driving their car then you are insured.

Have you tried GoCompare, Comparethemarket and Moneysupermarket m_rt?

My insurance expires tomorrow so i've been getting quotes too.

I've got 3 points on my licence (had them last year too when I took out my current insurance, so doesn't explain the price hike), but i've also got 11 or 12 years no claims. Direct Line pushed my insurance quote up to over £800 this time round, a jump from £444 last year. I tried again on their site to see if it was cheaper than the posted quote and it came to a totally ridiculous £959.70.

Cheapest quote I can get is £448 with LV using the comparison sites with £200 statuary excess + £250 voluntary. That's gone up £5 from 3 or 4 weeks ago when I got a quote then.

£464 with LV adding extra for motor legal protection. Next cheapest was £604 with Swift Cover, then £663 with Kwik Fit, then quotes start to even out around £700.

It's crazy how the prices have shot up for safe drivers

£574.21 so they're the second cheapest. Must be a lot of car thieves around these parts or something :?

I've gone with LV

It doesn't bode well for new drivers though.

Ah bollocks, I should have cancelled Direct line earlier. They do an automatic renewal by direct debit.

The money hasn't been taken yet paul, it will be the full amount if they do as it's miles cheaper paying outright. I remembered from their quote that ''You don't have to do anything, your insurance will be restart automatically'' or words to that effect.

I'm gonna cancel as soon as they open as I can't see the option for blocking a direct debit from them on my bank's website.
